Career Workshops

2009-2010 Workshop Schedule

No student should graduate from high school without the skills required to succeed in the world of work. A carefully planned continuum of career development workshops from grades 9/10 through 12 will lead students to an understanding of 21st century workplace skills and the connections between academic achievement and earning a living. Participation in career development workshops will help students:

• Expand awareness of the many jobs and careers available in the Career Academy theme area

• Explore the relationships between interpersonal skills, good work habits and success in the world of work

• Learn and practice literacy skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing)

• Address 21st Century skills needed for success in school and at work, such as: creative thinking, communication, teamwork, cooperation and flexibility, problem-solving, offering and receiving feedback, reflection, and self-assessment

• Examine critical workplace issues such as multicultural workforce, collaboration, continuously learning new technologies, being open to diverse perspectives

• Develop and refine a resume

• Assemble a Career and College Portfolio

There will be approximately 20 career development workshops. Key to the success of the workshops will be many opportunities for students to integrate their own experiences into the classroom activities. The workshops will be rigorous, challenging, and engaging.
